CRUSHING THE MYTH OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RATES PEAKING ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY.

No other day than Super Bowl Sunday produces the highest rate of domestic violence incidents.  Not a year goes by that I haven't heard this statement.  This year's Super Bowl showed a spot drawing attention to the issue, and unless you have lived in a cave you may have heard about the Ray Rice mess (if not, click here).   Millions of folks watched the game, saw the advertisement, and discussed the "fact" that the day of the Big Game is the most violent day for couples.  One problem:  it just isn't true.

I bought into this myth for a few years because it simply sounded correct.  Pardon my politically incorrect assumption it's the husband who is the aggressor, but since I'm not too into political correctiveness, just deal with this nonfactual premise:  We have the husband/boyfriend wanting to watch the game, having a few beers, getting REALLY INTO THE GAME, and BOOM! he decides to take out his teams loss (or win) on the spouse who had nothing to do with the husband's alcohol/testosterone fueled violence.

It's a myth folks, plain and simple.   Yes, domestic violence tragically does occur on a daily level, and yes on the day/night of the "Big Game", the ER wards are filled with spouses who suffered abuse.  The fact is, those ER wards are just as busy the day before, the week before, and on almost all days of the year.

Hat tip to the Tampa Bay Times on this matter.  Apparently, there are no factual studies that ever backed up the myth.  Even the character attributed to the statement denies it was ever made!

Domestic Violence Restraining orders, either the motion for a protective order, or defense of the same, demands you hire experienced and aggressive counsel.  If you need legal representation in  Riverside or San Bernardino County on a Domestic Violence issue, call (951) 276-0500 for a consultation.
