CHILD SUPPORT BASICS
Whether a Dissolution of Marriage, Legal Separation, or Paternity action, the law states "a parent's first and principal obligation is to support his or her minor children according to the parent's circumstances and station in life. Both parents are mutually responsible for the support of their children."
Payment of child support is calculated under the California Family Code as a "guideline" calculation, and will usually be paid on a monthly basis until the child turns 18 and graduated high school. There are many factors involved in the calculation, but the primary two factors considered in the calculation are (1) the amount of custodial/visitation time shared between the parents, and (2) the parties' respective incomes.
